Nearly 20,000 people cut loose Saturday night Sept 6, 2014 as Blake Shelton brought his Ten Times Crazier tour to Sleep Train Amphitheatre in Chula Vista, California. It was all about a great night of music, cowboy hats and boots, and tipping a few back.
Nashville duo Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney , Dan + Shay kicked off the night with a few of their hits ‘19 you + me’ and ‘show you off’. Country Legend, Neal McCoy provided some very entertaining interludes between each performance.
Neal McCoy performed a few of his hits as well; The city put the country back in me, Wink, and The Shake. He also did a unique mash up called the ‘Hillbilly Rap’ of covers with a little country twist including Harry Belafonte’s Day-O (the banana boat song), The Beverly Hillibillies Theme song (The Ballad of Jed Clampett), and even the Sugar Hill Gang’s Rapper’s Delight.
Next up on stage was Kimberly Perry, Reid Perry, and Neil Perry an all sibling group, The Band Perry. This group never disappoints energizing the crowd, from the first strum of the mandolin to the very last drum beat of their set, the momentum never falters. Lead singer, Kimberly Perry reflected back to the first time they performed on this stage supporting Tim McGraw’s Emotional Traffic tour in 2011, this was their third performance at Sleep Train Amphitheatre. The second performance was supporting Rascal Flatts in 2013.
A sweet moment of the night was led by a simple strum of the guitar, Kimberly Perry sang A Capella “If I die young,” the crowd quickly pitched in to sing the first verse without instruction. They did not let the nights energy die with a ballad, they quickly picked up the tempo one last time ending the night with ‘Better Dig Two’.
Headlining the evening was Blake Shelton. Blake is well known for being a coach on NBC’s hit TV show, The Voice. He was the winning coach three seasons in a row with vocalists: Jermaine Paul, Cassadee Pope, and Danielle Bradbury. Midway through this show Blake had a short acoustic set in the center of the pull out stage, one song was “My Eyes”accompanied by one of his own second season ‘The Voice’ contestant Gwen Sebastian.
There are some songs that seem difficult for artists to get through as well as for their audience. The next song, Over You was this moment. Blake told the story that his wife Miranda Lambert normally sings this song and his version sucks compared to hers. Over you is about Blake’s brother’s life and passing away. As the song started the audience reflected on their own similar experiences, some crying, some singing along, and some holding the cell phone lights up swaying.
A highlight of the night was Blake donning a white cowboy hat for a couple songs. It’s not just any cowboy hat though it’s a hat with a built in mullet – little party in the back. He started to play a couple of his earlier catalog tunes: Some Beach, and Ol’ Red. Check out Some beach youtube video here.
Overall the night was filled with great music ,a little somber at times, but some great tunes.
