Ahead of Tonight San Diego Music Awards.  Let’s look at the Rock Category:

Each of these have a unique sound, quality and texture to their music.  Whether you are into Harder in your face edgy Rock, Rockabilly, Psychedelic , Black Sabbath influenced, or a more soulful bluesy rock . For this reason, the list of nominees will be difficult to judge a winner as each have merit on their own.  So let’s get too it..

Starting off with BossFight :

BOSSFIGHT’s sound is a combination of “true to their roots punk rock”, with a heavy and melodic rock and roll edge. Complete with in your face screaming guitars and melodic two part harmonies, BOSSFIGHT is a powerful musical trio that must be experienced to appreciate.

Both in their lyrics and life, BOSSFIGHT gives their insight, provoking thought on the challenges facing their generation. Speaking out against the oligarchy, narcissism, and societies grip on human suffering at large.

EARTHLESS:

Formed in 2001, EARTHLESS prides itself on creating energetic, utterly unique and free thinking instrumental music inspired by an eclectic mix of German krautrock and Japanese heavy blues-rock. The Californian trio has dedicated itself to mastery of the mind-bending jam session, evoking the spirits of Jimi Hendrix and Black Sabbath in equal measure. Named after a song title from vintage New York garage-psych band The Druids of Stonehenge, EARTHLESS’ sound has been called “A sonic kaleidoscope of lava and lightning”, earning it the title of “California’s loudest band”. The group delivers “one of the best live shows in all of modern, heavy rock,” leading to one reviewer stating that the band’s “epic shredding harkens back to the days were psychedelic rock had balls the size of grapefruits and wasn’t afraid to take its listeners on a ride for which they may never return.”

The Farmers :

The Farmers are Jerry Raney, Joel “Bongo” Kmak, Chris Sullivan and Corbin Turner. They consider themselves a “Roots Crunchy Rock.”   But after listening to a couple songs there is a bit of more of a Rockabilly Americana Groove to it.  They are definitely stranding and blurring that line of Rock and Edgy Americana .

The Oxen:

There is no Biography or other information online for this band,  was only able to locate this single on Soundcloud.  Without a few additional soundclips it is difficult to give a complete review. Looking forward to hearing more in the future.

The Routine:

A Personal Favorite and a hopeful to take the award tonight The Routine.  The Routine is  a funk and rock collective that defies categorization in today’s genre-driven media cloud.   The Routine consists of Bryan Barbarin (Vocals) ,Russell Ramo (Guitar), Nick Hein (Bass) , Dave Butterfield (Drums).   Their Funky soulful playful , can we call this “Rock” songs are easy on the ears and can defy a particular genre.

The Schizophonics:

Most likely to take the award is The Schizophonics.    With a Kick Ass Female Drummer, Lety Beers and the extremely high energy Pat Beers at the Helm this band has made their rounds in San Diego scene. They are definitely a sight to see in San Diego Music.
